Alexandrite is one of the rarest of all coloured gemstones, famed for its colour change from intense blue-green colour in daylight, and purple-red colour under incandescent light, due to the unique and complex way the mineral absorbs light.
While other gems can exhibit a colour change, Alexandrite’s transformation is particularly striking and has been led to the phenomenon itself being often called ‘The Alexandrite Effect’.
Originally discovered in the Ural Mountains of Russia in 1830, Alexandrite is now found in locations around the world including India, Tanzania and Brazil.
Fine, faceted Alexandrite over 1 carat is exceptionally rare, demanding prices well above the traditional precious gems: Sapphire, Ruby and Emerald.
