Wickleins company history is traceable back to the year 1615. It all began with Joachim Häckel as a master gingerbread maker in Auerbach. In 1634, his son Hans Jäckel was already working as a gingerbread maker in Nuremberg. By marrying the gingerbread manufacturer Christian Mairs widow, Barbara Nußberger, the Jäckels took over the business and continued it, partly in Burghasloch, for six generations. At the end of the 19th century, one of the descendants, Heinrich Jäckel, moved back to Nuremberg, where his daughter Gunda Jäckel married the gingerbread manufacturer eponym of todays company, Gottfried Wicklein.

This marriage brought forth the children Karl Wicklein and Christa Wicklein, later to become Mrs Walter, who jointly managed the company as successors. Joining forces, the two families rebuild the factory in Bucher Strasse in Nuremberg, which was completely destroyed in the Second World War. Karl Wicklein dies in 1972 at the early age of 47. The company is now managed by Christa Walters son Ernst-August Walter and his sister Christa Eder.

As Wicklein started in Nuremberg, the city most famous for gingerbread, it has strived to become the leading brand of Original Nuremberg Lebkuchen with good reasons. From a small town shop to a nationally and internationally famous brand, Wickleins success was based on hard work, respect to tradition and a passion for gingerbreads. Wicklein inherited the traditional family recipes with their own unique flavours from centuries ago, improving their products with passionate and high quality craftsmanship, as well as carefully selected sustainable ingredients.
