Connemara is the windswept and heart-stopping beautiful region that lies in the western most part of Ireland facing out over the Atlantic Ocean. The word Connemara comes from the Gaelic meaning “Inlets for the sea”. Oscar Wilde described it best when he spoke of the region possessing a “savage beauty”. Beneath this sharp and rugged landscape lies the green marble, a rare, unique, and iconic gemstone.
Coming in over 40 shades of green this gemstone has a high magnesium content which is thought to aid in the absorption of calcium and magnesium. This precious marble stone of Ireland gives access to the spiritual history of Ireland and creates a sense of peace, tranquillity, restoration, and healing. Formed from sediment deposited in a shallow primal sea over 900 million years ago. The beautiful striations of rich to pale green within the marble are formed by tiny crystals of green serpentine, diopside, chlorite and rich white calcite with dolomite.
Each piece of Connemara Marble is an exquisite work of nature, showcasing a distinct pattern that tells a tale of its own. Formed over 900 million years ago, this marble has been embraced by Irish culture and history for centuries. Its deep green colour evokes images of Ireland's lush landscapes, from the rolling hills to the enchanting forests.
No two pieces of Connemara Marble are the same, each piece is completely unique – as unique as a fingerprint and an embodiment of its natural beauty and deep-rooted traditions.
Connemara Marble has been officially designated a World Heritage Stone. In 2022 our natural, green gemstone was given international recognition of its cultural importance and symbolism in Ireland. One of ten stone types to be designated as such in 2022, Connemara Marble is now one of only 32 Heritage Stones worldwide! The designation, made by the International Union of Geological Sciences, is due to the cultural, historic, and scientific value of the stone, which has been widely used in Ireland, Britain, USA and in many other countries since the early 1800s.
